Trim takeoff at a match line
With one area or line selected, a box dragged over its corners picks those corners, and Delete removes them so the outline closes between the corners that remain. Use it to cut back takeoff that runs past a match line; it needs an estimator seat.
What it's useful for
- A Smart Area result runs past the match line into ground the next sheet covers, so delete the corners past the line before the quantity is counted twice.
- A traced curb line overshoots the limit of work, so box its extra points at the end and delete them.
- An area traced on a satellite sheet takes in a corner of the neighboring lot, so trim those corners off.
Delete the corners past a match line
- With the Select tool (V), click the area or line; its corner handles appear.
- Press on an empty spot outside the shape and drag a box over the corners past the match line.
- Check that every corner you boxed shows a filled handle.
- Press Delete, or right-click the shape and choose Delete 2 points; the number matches your pick.
- Check the new edge and the quantity in the selection panel.
Limits and checks
- The new edge runs straight between the nearest corners you keep; it does not follow the match line. If the line falls between corners, drag a midpoint handle onto the line first to add a corner there, or split the area along the line and delete the far piece.
- If fewer than three corners would remain on an area, or fewer than two on a line, Delete removes the whole shape.
- The box picks corners only when exactly one area or line is selected and the box catches at least one of its corners. Otherwise it selects shapes.
- A drag that starts on a shape moves the shape instead of drawing a box, so start the box on an empty part of the sheet.
- One Delete is one undo step: Undo in the toolbar, or Ctrl+Z, restores every corner it removed.
Questions
Does deleting corners cut the shape exactly at the match line?
No. The outline closes straight between the nearest corners you keep. Drag a midpoint handle onto the match line first to put a corner there, or split the area along the line and delete the far piece.
Does trimming work on lines as well as areas?
Yes. Select one area or line, box its corners, and press Delete. A line needs at least two points left and an area three, or Delete removes the whole shape.
Can I get deleted corners back?
Yes. One Delete is one undo step, so Undo in the toolbar or Ctrl+Z restores every corner it removed.
