Cut out, split, and extend areas
Cut out an area subtracts a hole from a measured area, Split into two areas divides it along a path you click, and Add points (continue drawing) extends a finished area or line. Each edits existing takeoff on an estimator seat.
What it's useful for
- A concrete pad sits inside the asphalt lot outline, so cut it out of the asphalt area.
- A pay limit crosses one pavement area, so split it on that line to get each side's square yards separately.
- An addendum extends the curb past where your line stopped, so continue the existing line from its last point.
Cut a hole out of an area
Every area belongs to a condition: a named, colored measurement group with a unit, such as square yards (SY). A cutout reduces only its own area's quantity and is deleted with that area.
With one area selected, Cut out area (X) in the selection panel, or the X key, starts the same tool.
- Right-click the area you want to cut.
- Choose Cut out an area.
- Click each corner of the hole inside the area; the bottom bar shows the quantity removed.
- Double-click to finish the hole.
- Outline the next hole, or press Esc to stop cutting.
- Click the area and check its net quantity in the selection panel.
Split an area into two
Both pieces keep the original area's condition. To report one piece under a different condition, move it afterwards.
- Right-click the area.
- Choose Split into two areas.
- Click near the outline where the cut starts; the point snaps to the nearest edge.
- Click any bends in the cut inside the area.
- Double-click near the opposite edge to finish the cut.
- Click each piece to check its quantity.
Extend an area or line with Add points
New points join after the shape's last point: a line continues from its end, and an area closes from your newest point back to its first corner.
- Right-click the area or line.
- Choose Add points (continue drawing).
- Click the new points.
- Double-click to finish, or press Esc.
Limits and checks
- Split will not run on an area that already has cutouts, or on a cutout. Split the area first, then cut the holes out of each piece.
- A cutout subtracts its full area even where it runs past the area's edge, and overlapping cutouts are each subtracted, so keep every hole inside the outline.
- An area's net quantity stops at zero, however large its cutouts are.
- Cut out an area and Split into two areas work on areas only. Add points (continue drawing) works on areas and lines, not counts.
- A split does not carry the area's label to the pieces, and undoing the split does not bring it back.
- A cut that starts and ends at the same spot on the outline, or would leave a sliver, shows Could not split there and changes nothing.
Questions
Can I split an area that already has a cutout?
No. Split into two areas does not appear for an area with cutouts. Split the area first, then cut the holes out of each piece.
Can I undo a split?
Yes. Undo in the toolbar, or Ctrl+Z, removes the two pieces and restores the original outline in one step. The area's label does not come back.
