What is a curb and gutter?

A curb and gutter is one concrete section cast as a unit: a raised curb along the pavement edge and a gutter pan in front of it that carries stormwater along the road to inlets. The curb marks and protects the edge; the gutter is the drainage channel at its base. Takeoffs measure it in linear feet (LF) by type.

Is a curb the same as a gutter?

No. The curb is the raised face; the gutter is the shallow pan at its base, sloped so water runs along the curb line. Plans can call for curb alone, gutter alone, or the two cast together as integral curb and gutter, and each usually carries its own pay item.

What is a concrete curb?

A concrete curb is a raised concrete edge along pavement, sidewalk or islands. It is cast in place with forms, slip-formed by a curb machine, or set as precast pieces. Its size and shape come from the standard detail the plans reference, and that detail supplies the dimensions for calculating concrete volume.
