How many tons of asphalt does a dump truck haul?

Federal limits cap gross vehicle weight on the Interstate at 80,000 pounds, truck included, so a dump truck hauls its legal gross weight minus its own empty weight. That legal gross is often lower, set by axle count, axle spacing and state law, so ask the hauler for each truck’s legal payload in short tons.

What sets a dump truck’s asphalt payload

  • Axle limits: on the Interstate, federal limits are 20,000 pounds on a single axle and 34,000 pounds on a tandem axle.
  • Bridge formula: it can require a lower gross weight depending on the number and spacing of the axles.
  • State law: off the Interstate, each state sets its own commercial vehicle weight standards.
  • Tare weight: the empty truck and body count against the gross; payload is what remains.

Convert asphalt tons to dump truck loads

Divide the job tonnage by the hauler’s legal payload and round up. For an example 250-ton job at an example 18-ton payload: 250 ÷ 18 = 13.9, so 14 loads. Reconcile the delivered load tickets against the takeoff tonnage.
