How do I measure a PDF drawing?
Measure a PDF drawing by setting its scale first, then measuring with a distance or area tool. Calibrate on the bar scale or a labeled dimension: click both ends and enter the real length. Check a second printed dimension before trusting the results, because a sheet printed at half size no longer matches the scale written in its title block.
Measure a PDF drawing to scale in Zip Takeoff
Zip Takeoff reads scale text on the sheet and offers to apply it, lists presets such as 1" = 20' and 1/4" = 1'-0", and calibrates from two clicks on a known distance. Each sheet keeps its own scale, and correcting a scale recomputes every quantity already drawn on that sheet.
- 1
On the Takeoff tab, open the Scale menu and choose Calibrate….
- 2
Zoom in and click one end of the bar scale, then the other end.
- 3
Type the real distance in the ft and in boxes, then click Set scale.
Set the measuring scale on a PDF drawing
A PDF records the page in paper units, so a measuring tool needs a ratio between paper and ground before its readings mean anything. You can type the ratio printed on the sheet or calibrate from a distance you already know.
- 1
Open your PDF viewer's measure tool and find its scale or calibration setting.
- 2
If the title block reads 1" = 20', set 1 inch on paper to equal 20 feet.
- 3
If the sheet may have been reduced or exported at another paper size, calibrate instead: click both ends of the bar scale or a labeled dimension and enter its real length.
- 4
Measure another labeled dimension running the other way across the sheet. If it reads wrong, recheck the clicked ends and the units before you measure anything else.
Measure lengths and areas on a scaled PDF drawing
A distance tool takes two clicks. A perimeter or polyline tool adds up connected segments, which suits curb or pipe runs. An area tool closes a shape and reports the area inside it. Zoom in before each click: at site scales, a small miss on paper becomes feet on the ground.
Details on the same sheet are often drawn at a larger scale than the plan view. Measure a detail only after setting its own scale, or read its dimensions instead.
Free software for measuring scaled PDF drawings
Several PDF viewers include a measure tool, and some are free. Adobe Acrobat Reader is free, but Adobe states that its measuring tools are available to Reader users only when the PDF's creator has enabled measuring in the file. Whichever viewer you use, check that it can calibrate from a known length, not only accept a typed ratio, and that it can total many shapes into one quantity, which a takeoff needs.
Check a PDF drawing's scale with a printed dimension
Press D for the Dimension tool, click both ends of a length the sheet already labels, such as a parking stall depth, and compare the reading with the printed value. If they disagree, calibrate that sheet before taking off.
