How can I tell if a PDF is vector or raster?
Zoom in close on a line you plan to measure. Vector linework stays sharp at any zoom because it is stored as paths; a raster sheet, such as a scan, breaks into square pixels or blur. Test every sheet you will measure, because one plan set, and even one sheet, can hold both kinds of content.
Check a PDF for vector data with Smart Area in Zip Takeoff
Smart Area, Smart Linear and Smart Count in Zip Takeoff read the PDF's own vector drawing data, so they double as a test on the sheet you are about to measure. After setting the scale, click Smart Area and click inside one hatched region. When the clicked region is added and matching regions show in red, that part of the sheet has vector fills.
Scanned, flattened and satellite sheets have no vector data, so the Smart tools find nothing on them. Measure those sheets with the manual Area, Linear and Count tools instead.
Tests that show whether a PDF is vector or raster
- Zoom test: zoom as far as the viewer allows on a curb line or pipe run. Paths redraw with crisp edges; pixels turn into a stair-step grid. A high-resolution scan can look clean at moderate zoom, so keep going.
- Snap test: in a viewer whose measure tool snaps to paths or endpoints, such as Adobe Acrobat, hover over the end of a line. A snap means there is a path under the cursor; a scan gives the tool nothing to snap to.
- Select test: with an editing tool that selects page objects, click a line. On a scan, the click selects one image covering the sheet.
- Properties hint: document properties often name the application that made the file. A design program or plot driver suggests an export, scanner software suggests a scan, but a file can be printed or rebuilt after export, so treat this as a hint.
Is every PDF a vector PDF?
No. PDF is a container that can hold vector paths, text and raster images in any mix. A sheet exported from design software normally keeps its linework as paths. A sheet that was printed and scanned, or flattened to an image to shrink or lock it, holds only pixels.
Pages in one set can differ: a scanned survey or permit drawing can be bound in with exported sheets. A single sheet can also mix both, such as vector linework over an aerial photo, or a scanned detail placed on an exported plan. Test the region you will measure, not the title block.
Why selectable text does not make a PDF vector
Optical character recognition (OCR) adds a searchable text layer to a scanned image, so you can select and search words on a sheet whose linework is still pixels. The reverse also happens: some exports draw lettering as outlines, so a vector sheet can have no selectable text at all. Judge the linework by zooming or snapping, and the text on its own.
